CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The triplets float inside the gleaming octahedron. It’s like two pyramids stuck together base to base, mirror images of each other, one pointing up and one down. This geometry contains the morphing shapes of the triplets’ poses, their bodies moving like a single unit, like some kind of sentient liquid in the air. Quint designed and built the thing because the triplets need surfaces to push off from for momentum when they get too far apart to use each other’s bodies. They hover and twist inside the space contained by the apparatus of shiny rods, which spins slowly on the end of a cable descending from the fly space. They’re in a formation they couldn’t do on the floor: the tops of their heads meet together in the center of a triangular formation, each of them pointing away from one another at vertical angles. They hover and rotate in that orientation before using their hands to push themselves apart towards the rods that outline the shape they’re in. They each catch a rung, swing themselves around, somersault through the air as they come back together.

Jes stands at the control panel set piece, twiddling the fake knobs while he maintains the gravity field within the boundaries of the apparatus. He loves watching the triplets go through their paces, but can’t let himself lose focus on his field generation. It’s a trickier balance than he realized it would be at first. He’s getting the hang of it, though his mask slipping is a bit of a problem. Essa shared a tape-trick she uses with her costume to make sure no body parts pop out; maybe that will help with this mask situation.

The process of making this act has been very informative for him – he always just made fields to contain whatever it was he wanted to affect, amorphous blobs really. Giving actual shape to his fields is a level of control he’s never tried before.

The hanging gem lowers and the triplets dismount, moving through their final dance and tumbling sequence on the stage floor, tempting Bo’s character to enter their portal. Bo plays his part well, looking on as the mystical creatures from another dimension cast their thrall, entice him to join them, to escape his world of fear and pain. His character resists, raises high the artifact that Essa’s character gave him earlier in the show – a sphere the size of Bo’s head that shoots beams of light out of its luminous surface. The fog machine spews its mists as the trio of interdimensional interlopers is vanquished, their gem disappearing into the heavens as they exit upstage through the thick mists, to the soundtrack of Esmée vocalizing over the rumbling, carefully constructed chaos of the band.

The rest of the cast erupts in applause as the set slides back, and Moxo Thron takes his position center stage. He pauses.

“Excellent!” Aleia calls out. “We’ll take lunch and pick up with Moxo.”

The house lights come up and everyone splinters off into small groups and the tent fills with their chatter.
